CALL for ENTRIES - Gallery Show

 After reading an article from the New Yorker magazine, I've decided that I don't have enough diversity in the artists I represent at Through This Lens. So, I'm officially opening a call for artists of color, women, LGBTQ, and any other group that might be minimized in any way. Please, submit your photographs to me for consideration of a formal showing of your work. I will appreciate it if you will forward this message to anyone who might be interested. New Show by Eric Raddatz

Eric Raddatz has some eye catching large color prints, along with 25 small sepia toned prints. The larger prints are mostly 40"x53" + borders. The smaller prints are 8"x8" + borders. There are also a few medium sized color prints. This show presents two different sides to Mr. Raddatz' work - BRIGHT and COLORFUL along with quiet muted images.

This is the third show we've held of Mr. Raddatz' work, and has been very well received by the visitors.

Gallery News

January 4, 2021

Through This Lens had suspended in-person viewing of photographs until further notice. Maybe this will last a few months, or we may simply transition to an on-line gallery. For now, we continue to offer framing and printing services, but by appointment only.

We have shown photographs from around the world, with a smattering of other types of artwork, for more than 15 years.  Unfortunately, given the current state of public health, we think it best to avoid as much contact as possible, while still opening the doors when someone calls or writes ahead.

I hope you are all well, and that we are able to make contact again in the near future.

The BBC website is one of my favorite news and culture sources. Today I noticed "A Life Devoted to Photography" with a person in panda costume holding a baby panda. My first thought was Ami! You may know that she has spent a lot of time with pandas in China over the past few years, and a selection of her panda photographs were published in National Geographic a few months ago. Once I clicked on the link: http://www.bbc.com/news/in-pictures-43329546 my hopes were confirmed with the story about her. There are many images from around the world which Phil Cooms, BBC Picture Editor calls "...exquisitely beautiful...."If you don't already agree, I think you will once you've read the article or check out her web site at amivitale.com. Through This Lens has quite a good selection of signed prints of Ami's work. Please ask to see them on your next visit.

I ran across an article in the Washington Post web site with several award winning photographs. In browsing through the group, I recognized one that had a familiar look. Photographer Pete Turner 1934 - 2017

Pete Turner, one of those artists who's work you all know even if you don't know his name, passed away a few days ago at his home on Long Island. Mr. Turner's photographs often made use of electric-vibrant colors.  His work will live long, though in today's world most viewers will not appreciate how much work went into creation of those images - before computers dominated the craft. October Photography Month - now official

Who would guess that North Carolina now has an officially proclaimed Photography Month? Brittany Hillen, A Seattle based writer on dpreview.com recently published an article about Governor Roy Cooper's proclamation. 3 Photographers Visit the 5x7 Project

Dawn Surratt shown on the right above, is one of our featured artists with 15 photographs on display through early January . If you have not yet seen them,  come on down. While the three were here, we reminisced about the days of Dektol and a time when photography was simpler. The 5x7 project is, in part, a nostalgic trigger.

The 5x7 Project - A Beginning

New to Through This Lens: a scrap 5x7 enlarger to go with a 5x7 camera and accessories. I've used 4x5 a but this will help make even larger prints, eventually. I used the term scrap because this enlarger really needs a lot of work before it can be used - and because it was recently purchased from the Scrap Exchange in Durham, NC. It seems that almost anything can be found there!

As we make progress new postings will be made - but in the mean time, stop by to meet the new monster. It will be on display in the gallery area as a silent greeter.

On another note, stay tuned for news about changes at the gallery other than our new friend...

Ami Vitale in the news

Ami Vitale looks charming dressed as a panda holding her Nikon. Her photographs appear in the latest issue of National Geographic magazine in a story entitled "Pandas Gone Wild". Ami has long been a favorite at Through This Lens, having had two one-artist shows here and was one of the earlier widely published photographers to exhibit here. Her photograph "The Last Shangri La" also known as "Monk at the Red Doors" still tempts visitors and collectors. I hope you will read the article and share your thoughts about one of our most celebrated wildlife and people photographers.

Lori Vrba, author of the celebrated Moth Wing Diaries is in the news!  Her work is featured on LENSCRATCH on line magazine - with a new feature published June 2, 2016.

CLICK Photography Festival 2015

CLICK comes to the Triangle for 2015

This festival is devoted to making photography more widely recognized as an art, and to provide many opportunities for Triangle residents and visitors to not only see, but lean, tell tales and show some of their own work. Events will take place in Chapel Hill, Durham, Hillsborough and Raleigh from the walls of partly demolished buildings to the interiors of museums. All the Blues Gone book available again

All the Blues Gone by Rex Miller is back in stock after several months absence. This is a hard to find book filled with environmental portraits of Mississippi blues musicians photographed in the early 1990. Mr. Miller made 33 trips from New York to Mississippi to photograph, interview and record musicians. The book included a CD with interviews and music.

There are some vintage gelatin-silver black and white prints available at reasonable prices too. Please inquire about availability.

One More Prize Awaits, Winners & News Coverage

There is also a very nice article, by Blue Greenberg in a recent edition of the Herald_Sun, describing the exhibition including notes about some photos worthy of recognition, even though they were not "in the money." The exhibition will be on display through May 10, 2014. One thing to think about: You can participate next year. In only two years, this has become a popular and respected opportunity for the Triangle community to show their art and test the waters for both expert and public opinion. Also, please vote for your favorite entry if you have not already done so. There is one last prize to be awarded: The Peoples' Choice Award for 2014. The photographer whose photograph receives the most votes wins recognition and a $100 prize.

Ami Vitale and Giant Pandas

Photographer Ami Vitale, who has shown her photographs twice at Through This Lens, is in the news for her work documenting efforts to sustain the Giant Panda population in China. I've just received two different links to some of those photos:

Ami not only has striking images, but she is also a Nikon Ambassador and has done much work with The Nature Conservancy and National Geographic. If you don't know her work, or if you do, the panda photos are worth a look.

Thanks to Friends

Jim Kellough, and his wife Eleanor Mills deserve special thanks from me for the times they have saved the bacon at Through This Lens. As recently as last Saturday Jim answered the call to help with the last minute scramble to pull things together just before guests began to arrive. They are both true and generous friends, and I appreciate what they have done many times. When you see pictures on the walls, or information tags, or even table cloths please be aware that it might have been thanks to the hands of those good friends.

Bill Pope wins 2014 Will Grossman Award

Photographer Bill Pope, a regular at the Durham Farmers' Market, and long-time photographer raises his hand as Roylee Duvall announces the Will Grossman Award. This was only part of the award ceremony and opening reception for the 2nd Will Grossman Memorial Photo Competition. As you can see, there was quite a crowd, all excited to hear the winners for 2014.

Thank you to The Grossman family, especially Lynne Grossman, and her friends Rose Mills and her husband along with all the other Grossman family members and friends that help support this event. Let us not forget that the competition was created in order to remember Will Grossman and his devotion to photography, and other arts in the community. More details will be added to our web site soon. Special Thanks for Todd Tinkham for the photo.

This one was created by Todd Tinkham just before the exhibition for went on display at Through This Lens, and has been shown several times at the gallery.
